A Botanical Delight

Ordesa National Park and Monte Perdido is Spain’s oldest protected area and was declared a National Park in 1918. It was also named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. It is dominated by the great massif of Monte Perdido, which at 3,355 metres is the highest limestone summit in Europe.

Vestiges from the Ice Age

Over 70% of Posets-Maladeta Natural Park has elevations of over 2,000 metres. It also hosts the highest mountain in the Pyrenees, Mount Aneto, which soars at 3,404 metres. From here, you can also observe some of the glaciers still existing in the Pyrenees, such as the Aneto glacier in Mount Maladeta or the Llardana glacier in Mount Posets.

The village of Riglos is located at the foot of a majestic set of conglomerate rock formations almost 300 meters high.  It offers a range of sporting possibilities due to its unique formation and is home to the greatest colony of Griffon vultures in the whole of Europe, making it one of the most attractive regions to visit in the area for bird lovers and also climbers. The National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici is one of fourteen national parks in Spain and is the only one located in Catalonia. This beautiful region is at the very heart of the Pyrenees, and with many of its peaks reaching over 3,000 metres high, it is a goldmine for climbers.

Roaring ravines, crystalline waterfalls, and dense swamps turn this place into a mystical land of water. There are over 200 lakes and ponds to be found here where a sprawling diversity of animal and plant species exists, each struggling in its own way to survive in this challenging environment.

As a ZEPA zone (Special Protection Area for Birds), it is one of the most important bird reserves in Europe. Its steep rocky walls create an ideal home for many predatory species such as the Griffon and Bearded Vultures, Golden Eagle, and the Falcon Pilgrim.
